Family fun at the Church Hall

Family fun at the Church Hall

As we come out of the other side of Covid, we’re finding ways to re-connect with families, and support others who might not have been in contact with church before. This Sunday 27th from 3.30-5pm, we’re beginning by holding an afternoon gathering at the church hall for all ages, with afternoon tea, party food, some prayer activities, well-being resources and time to chat and spend time together. We’ll be thinking about the feeding of the 5000 with the message that we’re all invited, and that God can give us more than enough in all the different areas of our lives.

If you're a family, please come along and let us know - but please read on, whoever you are!

We would like to be able to offer a food bank that afternoon, and so we would really appreciate any donations of

  • dry/tinned foods with a long date,
  • squash/juice,
  • toiletries
  • “treats” like biscuits, crisps, dried fruits etc.

You can drop them to the vicarage this week, or bring them along to church on Sunday morning.

We would also be very grateful for offers of baking, particularly of scones, so we can give everyone a delicious treat!

You are also obviously all very welcome to come along on Sunday afternoon - have a think and pray about who you might invite, too, and bring them along.

Let us know if you’re able to help in any of those ways, or if you have any questions!

Family Fun Quiz

Family Fun Quiz

Join us for a fun online quiz. With something for everyone the quiz promises to challenge many aspects of your team’s knowledge, without being too difficult. There will also be a bake, cake & craft sale during the evening.
You’re invited to sponsor a table of 6 - 8 people at a cost of £5 per person. Or let us know if you want to join table with others. All funds raised will contribute towards the costs of maintaining our beautiful medieval church in Stoke Holy Cross, just south of Norwich.

Stoke Church big fundraising quiz!

Stoke Church big fundraising quiz!

Join us for an evening of fun, entertainment, good company, shared dinner, quizzes and an exciting auction of promises.
We are fundraising in aid of our partner churches in Tanzania and the Stoke Holy Cross church building fund.
Tables are booking up fast so don’t delay, book your place today! It’s a snip at just £5 per person.

Ideally we want to ask people to book a table and then fill it with family and friends so we can maximise the fundraising potential. If you can’t fill a table and still want to join in then let us know and we’ll try and put you together with others in a similar position.

The whole evening will be held online and you’ll be able to share part of the evening privately with your family and friends in “tables” using Zoom Breakout Rooms. We will auction off “promises" during the evening and welcome any promises you would like to offer. Promises could be a service (for example BabySitting, Car Washing or Gardening…) or a physical thing (such as a cake, a meal, a holiday…). The only limit is your imagination!

For more information contact andy@thehardings.uk, whilst to reserve a table or place, contact carole@thehardings.uk.
Alternatively call us on 01603 782667.

Please make online payments to STOKE HOLY CROSS PAROCHIAL CHURCH COUNCIL using the account number 00865680, sort code 206253 & reference FUNDRAISING. Payment can also be made by cheque (payable to STOKE HOLY CROSS PAROCHIAL CHURCH COUNCIL). Please write FUNDRAISING on the back of the cheque and pop it through Rob’s letterbox.

The Bible Course

The Bible Course

Whether you are brand new to the Bible or very familiar with it, excited to get stuck into the Scriptures or a little bit lacking in enthusiasm, we think you will love the Bible course. It takes a look at the whole Bible over 8 weeks, and invites us into the big story of God's plan for the whole of human history. We'll start at the beginning, end at the end, and do a whole lot more in-between. Why don't you spend a minute looking at the video below to get an idea of it?

I've got a few questions...

  • Do I have to just sit and watch the vicar talking all evening? No! The course consists of some video clips which we will all watch together, and then everyone gets to join in with some discussion questions. It will work best if we all do the same amount of talking!
  • I miss my home group. Can I catch up with them somehow? Yes! We'd love all our homegroups to join in, and if there are enough of us joining in we can use Zoom to split you down to existing groups to talk together, and to catch up and pray at the end. We'll add new people in to existing groups or create new ones depending on numbers.
  • Is there material I can use to help me in between the meetings? Yes, as part of each week we will offer you some things to read every day until the next session so that you really get into the habit of reading the Bible for yourself, and experiencing God speak to you in this way, over the next couple of months.
  • Do I have to know lots about the bible? No, it is designed to provide a bible overview to inspire people to start reading the bible, and encourage others to pick it up again or keep going deeper.
  • Is there a course handbook? Yes, we have uploaded a printable course handbook to our website here. If you would like to buy printed copies for you and your friends (£4.99 each) click here.
  • Will there be coffee and biscuits and stuff? We may just be able to meet together towards the end of the course, depending on the lockdown, but for now we are afraid that we have to meet online, so no, you will need to sort out your own biscuits.

Sound good? We think so! Click HERE from 7.15pm on Wednesday to join the meeting.

Easter Fun NOT at the Park

Easter Fun NOT at the Park

We are welcoming all famiies to join us online at the Vicarage at 4pm tomorrow for games, activities, songs, and a little bit of the Easter story. It's DEFINITELY online and not in person, and definitely NOT at the Park this year! There will be lots and lots for everyone to join in with at home, and we hope to see you there. It would be great if you wanted to show off an Easter hat or costume or facepaints, and if you could have a few simple craft supplies ready - paper, scissors, pens, and any junk you might be able to sellotape together if we get that far. To get a Zoom code to join us online just email by clicking on ROB ideally before Good Friday lunchtime, but we'll be checking until just before we start. See you there!

The Big Quiz

The Big Quiz

HUNDREDS OF CHURCHES.
THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE.
ONE BIG QUIZ.

Get together with your friends, family and church
for an epic evening of poverty-fighting fun.
This November churches and other groups up and down the country
will be taking part in the biggest multi-venue, nationwide quiz ever.
We’d love you to join in!

Get together a team of 6, and let us know you are coming! We are asking for a donation of around £5 a head, and that you bring your own picnic for 'half-time', and whatever you would like to drink.

All the proceeds of the evening will go towards our new partnership with churches in the Diocese of Kilimanjaro, looking to train and equip people so that their lives and communities will be transformed, and many will be lifted out of extreme poverty. There will be a chance to hear more on the night.

To register your team, please email admin@venta-group.org, or call Rob on 01508 492305 by the end of October.

Praying Together

It is an amazing privilege to be able to spend time with God, and to know that he hears our prayers—more than the best of human fathers. Please come and join us to pray anywhere, any time. Our prayers will cross parish boundaries as we hold the different villages before God wherever we are; please do cross them yourselves and join us as much as you can.

We look forward to seeing you at our Harvest Festival service this year. It would be helpful if you would email us on admin@venta-group.org so that we have an idea of what everyone is bringing and don't end up with all the same thing.

Lent breakfast - Everybody's Welcome!

Lent breakfast - Everybody's Welcome!

We are really looking forward to our Lent breakfasts for 2019, where everybody's welcome to join in a great course we will be using, looking at the things that we can do to help people when they are thinking about becoming part of our churches. It helps us to remember that anyone attending church should be made to feel welcome, and that welcoming is a ministry for every member of the church. We’ll be thinking about how we approach newcomers, and helping everyone to be part of it. It’s based on ideas that are the same for every church. It will give us some things we could decide to do, and some practical changes we can make.

It is an amazing privilege to be able to spend time with God, and to know that he hears our prayers—more than the best of human fathers. Across our group of churches we are meeting more regularly now, to pray that God’s kingdom will come in the world, and in our communities here, and that people will come to know Jesus. Please come and join us to pray anywhere, any time. Our prayers will cross parish boundaries as we hold the different villages before God wherever we are; please do cross them yourselves and join us as much as you can.

Our prayers will cross parish boundaries as we hold the different villages before God wherever we are; please do cross them yourselves and join us as much as you can.

Praying together in Arminghall

It is an amazing privilege to be able to spend time with God, and to know that he hears our prayers—more than the best of human fathers. Across our group of churches we are meeting more regularly now, to pray that God’s kingdom will come in the world, and in our communities here, and that people will come to know Jesus. Please come and join us to pray anywhere, any time. Our prayers will cross parish boundaries as we hold the different villages before God wherever we are; please do cross them yourselves and join us as much as you can.

Praying together at the Vicarage

Praying together at the Vicarage

It is an amazing privilege to be able to spend time with God, and to know that he hears our prayers—more than the best of human fathers. Across our group of churches we are meeting more regularly now, to pray that God’s kingdom will come in the world, and in our communities here, and that people will come to know Jesus. Please come and join us to pray anywhere, any time. Our prayers will cross parish boundaries as we hold the different villages before God wherever we are; please do cross them yourselves and join us as much as you can.

Venta Group of Churches Big Discipleship Day with John McGinley

Venta Group of Churches Big Discipleship Day with John McGinley

We are so excited to be welcoming John who will be spending the day with us, thinking through some of the principles in his new book Mission-Shaped Grace. We will be thinking together about why Mission and Discipleship go together, and get loads of good ideas for our vision to grow in Community, Discipleship and Evangelism. We are looking forward to hearing about things people are doing to help them live more like Jesus lived, and do the things that Jesus did. We will be worshipping and praying together, sharing food and one another's company, and growing in our journey of following Jesus together.

We’d love to have you with us! Come for the whole day if you can, or be with us as long as you can if that’s not possible. Email admin@venta-group.org, sign up in church, or ring Rob on 01508 492305 to let us know you are coming. Bring lunch for you, and some cake to share! Drinks will be provided.

We would be delighted to provide a separate children’s session, so if you would like to see them encouraged in their faith, and you can bring them with you, please give us plenty of notice that they are coming!

2017 churches open day and gift day

As part of our harvest celebrations this year, we would love to invite you to come and join us at Stoke, Caistor or Arminghall church to find out more about what our churches are doing, and the hopes and plans we have for the future. We would be really keen to hear especially about any ways you think our churches can serve our local community better. And yes, we have called it a gift day, because if you would like you can make a donation towards the upkeep of our wonderful buildings, and the work we hope to do in some of them to make them better places for the whole community. Most importantly, there will be drinks and cake for everyone! Please come and drop in. If you want to find out more, we have put gift day leaflets in all of our Free For All magazines this month, but you can get one at the church, or print and download one from the resources section above, under Gift Day. See you there!

Big group service and annual meetings

We have had a brilliant year in our group of churches, and we are gathering to celebrate all that God has done amongst us in 2016 and the first part of this year. We will be joining together in worship from 10.30, with a separate group for the children and the chance to hear more from Rob about the future as we move forward together, and then after lunch all the PCCs will be having separate meetings to look back over the last year and plan for the next. It is one of the most important days in the churches' calendar, and we really look forward to having you with us.

Lent Course 2017

Join us for Lent this year as we go deeper into the Scriptures, using the Pilgrim Course. It will help us to understand that the Bible is

Breath             Water                Light                            Sword              Bread

and find out how the Scriptures feed, sustain and enlighten us, and teach us how to make bible reading part of our regular life with God.

This year we will be having a series of breakfasts around the villages where we can spend more time together creating community and deepening discipleship through food, and some listening, talking, and prayer. We would love people from across the group to join us at each of these. You can sign up on a Sunday, or email lent@venta-group.org. 8.30-10am every week.

Alpha

Alpha

Alpha is a brilliant, interactive course which is a great way to find out more about the Christian faith for the first time, to discover it again, or to deepen your understanding of some key things about following Jesus. Each evening consists of food, a talk, and the chance to discuss the evening's topic - and anything else that occurs to you! Every question, and everyone, is welcome at our next course, which is running on Monday evenings at the moment from 7.30pm.

We are meeting at the Vicarage, with food at 7.30 and a film and discussion from about 8. The film topics include questions like

Is there more to life than this?

Who is Jesus? Why did he die?

What about prayer? the Bible?

How can I be sure of my faith?

If you have other questions, you are welcome just to turn up and ask those - the film and topic are a starting point, not a restriction of any kind. If a whole term seems a big commitment, just plan to come for 2 or 3 to start with and see how you get on. If you would like to join in but Mondays are tricky, please let us know - it might be that another day would suit others better too, or that we can arrange another course another time. If you would like to come and eat with us, but have particular dietary requirements, we would love to hear from you so we can help with that too. Start with the trailer below!

Filling Station

Filling Station

Meeting since early 2016, the Yare Valley Filling Station is sharing an informal way of expressing the Christian faith.
Guests receive a warm welcome and enjoy homemade cakes and coffee, followed by worship, testimony, teaching and the chance to give or receive prayer. The Filling Station, which was born out of the Church of England in the West Country, has grown exponentially in terms of venues opening all over the United Kingdom and continues to serve and refresh both Church leaders, congregations and more importantly to open the eyes of those who are seeking answers to the meaning of life through the Christian faith. The Filling Station is helping to bring unity amongst believers from across the whole Church spectrum.

The Yare Valley Filling Station meets 3rd Thursday evenings most months - check for more information here: http://thefillingstation.org.uk/station/yare-valley/

We will spend time together holding before God the things that we are hoping for in the life of the churches here, so as we look ahead to Christmas and Alpha and everything that is in store with our Community, Discipleship and Evangelism vision for 2016 and beyond, we really look forward to seeing you!

New Wine Leaders' Training Day with Ian Parkinson

This day will give church leaders from across the East region the chance to take a break from the ins and outs of ministry and to worship, hear from God, and receive prayer together. We are delighted to welcome Ian Parkinson of CPAS, a friend of many in the Eastern region from his time as East and North regional director of New Wine. Ian will be sharing from his 2015 book Reignite, full of thoughtful reflection and practical wisdom on the theme of rekindling hope and purpose in the local church. He will be touching particularly on the issue of changing culture in church. All involved in church leadership - overall leaders and other leadership team members etc - really welcome.

Drinks provided, please bring your own lunch.

Donations towards costs, please. Ian’s book for sale!

To help with catering, or if you have any questions, RSVP

Getting together to talk about prayer

Getting together to talk about prayer

Getting together to talk about prayer, Wednesday 5th October

As we respond as churches to the Diocese’s call to continue to grow in Discipleship, Service and Numbers, I am more and more aware of the need to pray. In the New Year, we will give time like we did last January to thinking about prayer, and this year we will respond to the struggle that many of you have expressed to me about finding the time, discipline or energy to spend time with God for ourselves. I am excited that once again this year we will have visiting speakers including Bishop Graham to help us to do this.

In the meantime I would love to do some thinking about the ways that we pray together, and I would be really glad if any and as many of you as possible would come and join at the Vicarage for coffee (& equivalents!), cake, discussion and a bit of prayer on Wednesday 5th October at 7.30pm. Just turn up on the day – and if you feel keen to bring a cake, please do let me or Cathryn know! This is in the place of the Stoke Prayer House meeting so this evening should already be in some diaries anyway!

Here are a couple of things I think worth pondering, and you might have other ideas to bring along and throw in…

  • Shall we keep doing the evening monthly meeting as it is or shall we change that?
  • I want to suggest a daytime monthly meeting following the House of Prayer format…
  • Could we have some sort of prayer meeting/service in Arminghall and Caistor every month so that there is something in all 3 parishes?
  • How are the intercessions? What is it like preparing them? what help do you need, and what ideas do you have that others might find helpful?
  • And anything you want to add in…

Hope this excites you/ whets the appetite a bit – please do come and join us!

Autumn dinner and Vision launch evening

Autumn dinner and Vision launch evening

We had a wonderful day away with the PCCs last Saturday 3rd at the Call to Prayer centre in Norwich, where we began to imagine together a future for our whole group of churches growing in Discipleship, Service and Numbers. I use the word imagine because one of the things which inspired us was the words in the image above from Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, which comes from the new Diocesan mission strategy, looking to develop Committed to Growth towards 2021.

We would love you to join in with the next steps of this exciting vision by coming to an autumn dinner and launch evening in the Church Hall on Thursday 8th September at 7.30pm. Please email admin@venta-group.org if you would like to come, or sign up in church.

Thy Kingdom come prayer night

This Pentecost the Archbishops of Canterbury are calling the church in this nation, (not just the Church of England) to join together in prayer for the evangelisation of our nation, that people would come or return to a relationship with the living God through the Lord Jesus. They encourage us to pray for the renewal of the Holy Spirit in our midst, and the confidence to share our faith with those around us.

In the Venta group we will be doing a mixture of things in the week running up to Pentecost:

  1. At our services next Sunday, we will be distributing resources to help people pray as individuals for the week ahead, and beyond.
  2. Stoke, Caistor and Arminghall churches will be open 10-5 all week, so people can come in and sit and pray, with special material on display.
  3. There will be services of Morning Prayer at 9am at Arminghall Church on Monday 9th, at Stoke Church on Tuesday 10th, and at Caistor church on Wednesday 11th.
  4. There will be prayer walking at 7.30pm from Caistor church on the Monday, from Arminghall Church on the Tuesday, and from Stoke Church Hall on the Wednesday
  5. We will be praying together, and reflectively using prayer stations, at Stoke Church from 7-11pm on Friday 13th May.

We’d love to pray with you—come whenever, wherever you can! PS there will now be no PRAYER HOUSE 4th May, and this will resume as normal on Wednesday 1st June.
